Product Description

1 Carat Emerald Cut French Pavé Engagement Ring in 14K Gold

A 1ct emerald cut Lab-Grown Diamond, D–F color, VS+ clarity, IGI certified, held in four claw prongs above a French pavé band — round brilliants set into scalloped cutouts that carry down both shoulders and around the shank. Solid 14K yellow, white or rose gold, cut to your finger and made in 7 to 10 business days on my bench in Woodside, Queens. Here is what to know before you buy one.

What is French pavé, and how is it different from regular pavé?

In standard bead pavé the stones sit in a flat channel of metal, held by small beads raised at the edges. In French pavé a V-shaped cutout is carved out beneath each stone, so the metal underneath is scalloped away rather than solid. Two things follow from that. Light reaches the stones from below as well as above, so they read brighter than the same diamonds in a bead setting. And far less gold shows between them from the side, so the band looks like a line of diamonds rather than a line of metal with diamonds in it. It is the more difficult of the two settings and the better-looking one.

Why French pavé suits an emerald cut

An emerald cut is a step cut. It holds light in long slow flashes instead of scattering it, which is why the shape reads as calm and why some people find it too quiet worn plain. The pavé answers that, and it answers it in the right place — down on the band, away from the stone. The wide open table stays uninterrupted while fine scatter happens below it. Because French pavé lets light in from underneath, that contrast is sharper than it would be with bead pavé: a still, architectural center above a band that genuinely sparkles.

How big is a 1 carat emerald cut?

Roughly 7mm long by 5mm wide. It faces up longer than a 1 carat round, which is about 6.5mm across, but narrower, because a step cut carries more weight in its depth. The wide table makes it look more substantial than the millimeters suggest, and the pavé running up to the head frames the outline and makes the center read wider still.

Why does clarity matter more on an emerald cut?

Because step-cut facets are windows, not mirrors. A brilliant cut bounces light back and buries an inclusion in the noise; an emerald cut lets you look straight into the stone, and an inclusion that would vanish in a round stays visible here. That is why yours is VS+ rather than the SI grades common at this size. The same logic applies to color — the open table shows tint, so D through F is what keeps it clean. The IGI report ships with the ring.

Do French pavé stones fall out?

Not if they are set properly, and French pavé is where that distinction bites. Because the metal beneath each stone is cut away, there is less material holding it and no room for a sloppy seat — every cutout has to be shaped to the stone and every bead raised and burnished tight. That is exactly why it looks better and why it takes longer. I cut and set these by hand under a scope. If a stone ever does come loose, the lifetime warranty covers the craftsmanship and I reset it — you are talking to the person who set it, not a call center.

Can a French pavé band be resized?

Within a limit, and this is the honest trade-off with a diamond-set shank. There is only so much plain metal to work with, so I can size it up or down about one full size safely; beyond that the setting has to be reworked. Get your size right the first time. Complimentary resizing still applies within 60 days, but tell me if you are unsure and I will send a sizer before I cast.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?

Not perfectly with a straight band. The pavé comes down the shoulders and sits proud of the shank, so a flat band meets it with a small gap. A contoured band solves it, and it also looks right — a plain straight band beside a pavé shank reads unfinished. Since I make both to order, tell me and I will cut the pair together.

Is the gold solid, or plated?

Solid 14K throughout — not plated over brass, not gold-filled. White gold is rhodium-finished the way every white gold ring is, and I re-finish yours whenever it needs it. Nickel-free in all three colors.

How long does it take?

Made to order in 7 to 10 business days, sizes 4 through 9 including halves. Craftsmanship carries a lifetime warranty, and you have 14 days to return it if it is not right and you have not had it engraved. It ships fully insured in our signature suede pouch with the IGI report.

What if I want the same stone on a different band?

The 1ct emerald cut solitaire is the plain-band version. There is also an emerald cut with a hidden halo if you want the sparkle under the stone instead of on the band, an emerald cut in a full bezel, and an emerald cut with lotus prongs and milgrain. Anything not on the site, I build custom.

Who makes it?

I do. One bench, one pair of hands, in a workshop in Woodside, Queens. The French pavé is the most time-consuming part of this ring — each cutout is carved individually and every bead has to line up with the one before it. A single stone sitting a fraction high catches the eye immediately, and there is no faceting on an emerald cut to distract from it. Nothing here sits in a case waiting for a buyer. Yours is cast, set and finished after you order it.
