A square cushion, with a length-to-width ratio near 1.00 to 1.05, reads classic and vintage. An elongated cushion, 1.15 and up, slims the finger the way an oval does but keeps softer shoulders. Tell me which you want before I draw the CAD, because the prong layout changes with the outline.
Slightly, face-up. Cushions are cut deeper to build those big chunky flashes, so a 1ct cushion at roughly 5.5mm reads a little smaller than a 6.5mm round. If spread is the priority, look at oval or pear; if fire is the priority, the cushion wins.
It is one of the most practical shapes you can choose. There are no sharp points and the corners are rounded, so there is nothing thin to chip. Set in four or more prongs, a cushion handles active hands and daily wear without fuss.
The shape descends from the old mine cut of the 1800s, which was faceted to glow under candlelight. That lineage is why a cushion reads romantic and antique even in a clean modern setting, and why it pairs so naturally with milgrain and vintage-inspired details.
It is the classic halo shape. A full halo adds visible spread around the stone, while a hidden halo tucks the pavé under the stone so the outline stays clean face-up and the sparkle shows from the side. Both suit a cushion; the choice is how loud you want it.
A straight band sits flush against a low cushion solitaire. If your ring has a full halo, a curved or notched band closes the gap better. Because both rings are made to order, I size them as a pair so they meet cleanly from day one.
