One 5mm Lab-Created Ruby held in four prongs, on a chain, and nothing else. Red is the hardest color to wear casually and the easiest to wear well — a single stone at the collarbone does more than a whole necklace of something quieter. Solid 14K yellow, white or rose gold, made to order in 7 to 10 business days on my bench in Woodside, Queens.
Yes. Lab-Created Ruby is corundum — chemically, optically and physically the same material as mined ruby, with the same crystal structure and the same 9 on the Mohs hardness scale. It is not a simulant like glass or cubic zirconia, which are different materials pretending to be ruby. The only difference is where it formed. What that buys you is a clean, evenly saturated red at a fraction of what an untreated mined stone of the same color would cost, and almost every mined ruby on the market has been heat treated anyway.
Roughly half a carat, and about the width of a pencil eraser. At the collarbone that reads as a deliberate single stone rather than a delicate accent — big enough to be the point of the necklace, small enough to wear under a shirt collar every day. Ruby is denser than diamond, so a 0.5ct ruby faces up slightly smaller than a 0.5ct diamond would; the 5mm measurement is the number that matters.
A ruby set against a solid backing goes dark. The color in corundum comes from light passing through the stone rather than bouncing off the surface, so closing the back turns a red gem into a red spot. The basket here is left open underneath, which is why the stone stays lit at the collarbone rather than reading flat. It is the single most important decision in setting a colored stone and the one most often gotten wrong.
Yellow gold warms the red and pushes it toward the traditional. White gold cools it and makes the stone read more sharply saturated against the metal. Rose gold is the unexpected one — the pink in the alloy sits so close to the ruby that the two blend, which reads softer and more modern. There is no wrong answer here, but they are genuinely three different necklaces.
Yes, and that is most of the argument for ruby over softer colored stones. At 9 on the Mohs scale corundum is the hardest gem material after diamond — it will take knocks against a desk edge or a seatbelt buckle without the surface dulling the way an emerald or an opal would. This is a pendant you put on and forget about rather than one you save for occasions.
It is, which makes this an obvious July birthday gift. Red also has a long history as an anniversary stone — ruby traditionally marks the fortieth. And it works as a first colored piece for someone whose jewelry is all gold and diamonds, because a single stone keeps it simple enough to sit alongside what they already wear.
An adjustable solid 14K cable chain that wears at either 16 or 18 inches with a lobster clasp, in the same metal as the setting. Solid throughout — not plated, not hollow, not gold-filled. Sixteen inches sits at the base of the throat; eighteen sits just below the collarbone.

I do. One bench, one pair of hands, in a workshop in Woodside, Queens. Nothing here sits in a case waiting for a buyer — yours is set and finished after you order it. If something is wrong with it, you are talking to the person who made it.
Every BPQ piece begins as a custom design developed in our New York studio. Each ring is digitally modeled, then crafted in solid 14K gold using high-precision casting and finished by hand - polished, refined, and stone-set for lasting durability.
