How big is a 1.5 carat cushion cut?
Roughly 6.5mm across. A 1.5ct round measures about 7.4mm, so a cushion faces up a little smaller edge to edge — like a princess, it carries more of its weight in depth. What it gains is corner-to-corner spread and a softer outline, which is why a cushion reads wider and warmer on the hand than the millimeters imply.
What is a cushion cut, exactly?
A square with rounded corners and gently rounded sides — the name comes from the pillow shape. Unlike an emerald cut, which is a step cut, a cushion is brilliant-faceted: the facets radiate from the center the way a round's do, which is why it holds far more sparkle than its square outline suggests. It is the closest shape in the catalog to a round, with the geometry of a square.
Cushion or round at 1.5 carats?
A round is brighter and faces up marginally larger. A cushion is softer in outline, slightly less expensive per carat, and less expected — which for a lot of people is the whole appeal. If you like round but want something that does not look like everyone else's ring, this is the shape to look at. They are genuinely close cousins rather than opposites.
Are the corners fragile?
No, and this is one of the cushion's real advantages at larger sizes. The corners are rounded rather than pointed, so there is nothing sharp to chip against a doorframe the way a marquise or pear tip can. Four prongs hold it securely and no V-prongs or reinforced head are needed. Along with the emerald cut it is one of the most durable shapes you can wear every day.
What color and clarity is the diamond?
D through F, the colorless range, and VS+ clarity, eye-clean at any angle. Cushions are brilliant-faceted so they hide inclusions better than a step cut — but at 1.5 carats there is more surface for both tint and inclusions to show than there is at a carat, and cushions in particular can hold warmth in the corners. Staying in D–F keeps the whole stone even. The IGI report ships with the ring.
Which wedding band fits it?
A contoured band. There is a second gallery under the head — an extra rail of gold beneath the basket that carries the stone's weight and stops the prongs flexing over years of wear. It is why this head will still be tight in a decade, and most makers leave it out. It is also why a straight band will not seat: the band meets the gallery rather than the shank and stands off, leaving a gap under the stone. A curved band dips at the center, clears the gallery and nests flush. I make both to order, so tell me and I will cut the pair to meet properly — or start with the plain contour band or the pavé contour.
How long does it take, and can it be resized?
