Oval Three-Stone Engagement Ring
An oval already reads longer on the hand than its carat weight suggests. Put a round on either side and the whole setting stretches further again — three stones in a line running the length of the finger rather than one sitting on top of it.

Why the sides are small on purpose
Three-stone rings fail when the side stones argue with the centre. At a tenth of a carat each these are deliberately subordinate — they extend the line and give the eye somewhere to travel, but nobody looking at the ring is in any doubt about which stone is the point. Larger sides would turn a 1ct oval into the middle of three rather than the centre of one.
What three stones traditionally mean
Past, present and future is the usual reading, and it is why the three-stone has been a proposal ring for a century. It also works as an anniversary or milestone ring, which is worth knowing if you are buying for something other than an engagement.
How it wears
The stones sit low across a plain tapered shank, so it pairs flush with most straight wedding bands without a gap. Because the setting runs lengthwise rather than sideways, it stays comfortable between fingers in a way a wide cluster does not.
