How big is a 2 carat oval diamond?
Roughly 10mm long by 7mm wide. That is the number worth holding onto: a 2ct round measures about 8.1mm across, so this oval runs nearly 2mm longer for the identical weight and identical price bracket. On a size 6 finger a 10mm oval spans essentially the full width. It is the point at which people stop asking what size it is.
Oval or round at 2 carats?
This is the real decision at this weight and the answer is usually oval. A round carries much of its weight in depth, below the girdle where nobody sees it. An oval spreads the same weight lengthwise, so more of the stone shows face-up — and because price per carat climbs steeply past a carat and a half, the millimeters you gain for free matter more here than they do at a carat. If you want the largest visible stone your budget reaches, elongated shapes win, and the oval is the least unusual of them.
What about the bow-tie?
Every oval has one — a darker band across the center where facets fail to return light — and it is at 2 carats that a bad one becomes a problem you notice every day rather than a technicality. It appears nowhere on a lab report, so it cannot be bought against from a spec sheet. I check every oval face-up at the bench before it goes into a setting, and at this size I reject more of them than I accept.
What color and clarity is the diamond?
D through F, the colorless range, and VS+ clarity, eye-clean at any angle. Both grades earn their keep here. Elongated shapes concentrate body color toward the ends, so a warmer stone reads faintly yellow at the tips — and a 10mm oval has plenty of end to show it in. More surface also means more room for an inclusion to sit where the eye lands. The IGI report ships with the ring.
Does a 2ct oval need a stronger setting?
It needs a heavier head, yes. A 10mm stone has leverage that a 6.5mm stone does not, and prongs built to one carat proportions will flex and loosen over years. Yours is built for the weight it carries. That is invisible in a photograph and it is the difference between a stone you check annually and a stone you worry about.
Which wedding band fits it?
A contoured band. There is a second gallery under the head — an extra rail of gold beneath the basket that carries the stone's weight and stops the prongs flexing over years of wear. It is why this head will still be tight in a decade, and most makers leave it out. It is also why a straight band will not seat: the band meets the gallery rather than the shank and stands off, leaving a gap under the stone. A curved band dips at the center, clears the gallery and nests flush. I make both to order, so tell me and I will cut the pair to meet properly — or start with the plain contour band or the pavé contour.
How long does it take, and can it be resized?
Made to order in 7 to 10 business days, sizes 4 through 9 including halves. Resizing is complimentary within 60 days of delivery, craftsmanship carries a lifetime warranty, and you have 14 days to return it if it is not right and you have not had it engraved.
