A 2ct emerald cut Lab-Grown Diamond, D–F color, VS+ clarity, IGI certified, held above a hidden halo of pavé diamonds, on a band set with pavé down both shoulders in solid 14K gold. What is a hidden halo?
A ring of small diamonds set around the outside of the basket, below the center stone, facing outward rather than up. From directly above you do not see it. From the side, and every time her hand moves, a band of light appears underneath the stone. It is a detail for the wearer rather than something announced across a room.
Where does the pavé stop and the halo begin?
An emerald cut earns its look from restraint, and pavé is the one thing that can undo it. The center stone is long parallel steps with nothing to distract the eye, so I keep the shoulder stones small and stop the run short of the halo, leaving clean polished gold either side of the head. The pavé is there for the finger, not for the stone. Run right up to the halo it turns a step cut into a busy ring, which is the opposite of why anyone chooses this shape.
Does a hidden halo make sense at 2 carats?
Yes, though for a different reason than lower down the range. At two carats the stone no longer needs help looking large, so the halo stops being a size argument and becomes a detail for the wearer, seen from the side and known about by the person wearing it. The pavé band is doing more of the visible work at this weight than the halo is.
Why hide the halo on an emerald cut?
Because a face-up halo would ruin it. An emerald cut is long parallel steps and open flashes, and ringing that with small round brilliants sets two opposite visual languages against each other. Underneath, the halo adds light to the side profile without touching the calm of the table. On this shape hiding the halo is not a style preference. It is the only sensible place to put one.
How much pavé is on the band?
The shoulders carry hand-set pavé Lab-Grown Diamonds down roughly half the shank, bead set and bright cut so the metal between the stones still throws light rather than going flat. Half coverage rather than full is deliberate: the underside stays plain gold, which is easier to resize, more comfortable against the next finger, and does not wear stones against a desk all day.
Does it make the diamond look bigger?
No. A traditional halo surrounds the stone face-up and enlarges the outline. A hidden halo sits underneath, so face-up you see exactly what this stone gives you. What the halo adds is depth in the side profile, and what the pavé adds is light along the finger.
Does it sit higher than a solitaire?
Slightly. The halo needs room beneath the stone, so the head sits a touch taller than the plain solitaire in the same shape. On most hands the difference is not noticeable in wear. If she works with her hands or has asked for a low profile, the plain solitaire is the better ring.
What color and clarity is the center diamond?
D through F, the colorless range, and VS+ clarity, eye-clean at any angle. Color matching matters more here than on a solitaire because the halo sits directly against the center and the pavé runs away from it down the shoulders. A warm halo under a colorless stone is the most common tell of a cheaply built ring, and it shows from exactly the angle the halo is meant to be seen from. Which wedding band fits it?
A contoured band. There is a second gallery under the head — an extra rail of gold beneath the basket that carries the stone’s weight and stops the prongs flexing over years of wear — and the hidden halo sits on top of it. A straight band meets the gallery rather than the shank and stands off. A curved band dips at the center, clears both and nests flush. I make both to order — or start with the plain contour band or the pavé contour.
How long does it take, and can it be resized?
Made to order in 7 to 10 business days, sizes 4 through 9 including halves. Resizing is complimentary within 60 days of delivery, craftsmanship carries a lifetime warranty, and you have 14 days to return it if it is not right and you have not had it engraved.
