How big is a 2.5 carat oval diamond?
Roughly 10.5mm long by 7.5mm wide. At this size the width becomes as important as the length — 7.5mm is wider than a 2ct round is across, so the stone fills the finger side to side as well as running up it. A 2.5ct round measures 8.7mm; this oval is nearly 2mm longer and covers meaningfully more hand for the same weight.
Is a 2.5ct oval too big for a small hand?
Possibly, and it is worth measuring rather than guessing. Most fingers in sizes 4 to 6 run 15 to 17mm wide across the top. A 10.5mm by 7.5mm oval will sit inside that but not by much, and on a size 4 it will read as edge to edge. That is the look some people want and the look others regret. If you are unsure, send me her ring size and I will tell you honestly how it will sit — and a 2ct oval at 10mm by 7mm is a small step down that changes the proportion noticeably.
What about the bow-tie?
Every oval has one — a darker band across the center where facets fail to return light — and at two and a half carats a poor one is not a technicality, it is the thing you see first every day. It appears nowhere on a lab report, so it cannot be specified around. I check every oval face-up at the bench before it goes into a setting, and at this weight I turn down most of what I am offered.
What color and clarity is the diamond?
D through F, the colorless range, and VS+ clarity, eye-clean at any angle. Both grades matter more here than anywhere below two carats. Elongated shapes concentrate body color toward the ends, and a 10.5mm oval has a lot of end for it to pool in — a warmer stone reads visibly yellow at the tips. More table also means more room for an inclusion to land where the eye goes. The IGI report ships with the ring.
What does a 2.5ct stone need from the setting?
A heavier head than most makers give it. A 10.5mm stone has real leverage, and prongs sized to one carat proportions will flex and loosen over years of wear. Yours is built for the weight it carries — thicker prongs, a heavier basket, and a second gallery under the head: an extra rail of gold beneath the basket that carries the stone's weight rather than leaving all of it on the prongs. Most makers leave that gallery out. It is invisible in a photograph and it is the difference between a ring you have serviced and a ring you worry about.
Which wedding band fits it?
A contoured band, and the second gallery is what decides it. A straight band meets the gallery rather than the shank, so it stands off and leaves a gap under the stone. A curved band dips at the center, clears the gallery and nests flush. I make both to order, so tell me and I will cut the pair to meet properly — or start with the plain contour band or the pavé contour.
How long does it take, and can it be resized?
Made to order in 7 to 10 business days, sizes 4 through 9 including halves. Resizing is complimentary within 60 days of delivery, craftsmanship carries a lifetime warranty, and you have 14 days to return it if it is not right and you have not had it engraved.
