Heart-Shaped Lab-Created Ruby Halo Ring in Solid 14K Gold
A blood-red heart, the color most people picture when they think of love, held in three prongs and wrapped in a halo of Lab-Grown Diamonds that follows its outline all the way to the point. It sits on a smooth 2.5mm band of solid 14K gold that keeps every bit of attention on the red. Designed, cast, set and polished by hand in my Woodside, Queens workshop.
Why a heart-shaped ruby?
Ruby has stood for love and passion for as long as people have worn gemstones, so a ruby cut into a heart says one thing and says it plainly. The heart's faceting radiates from a central star, so the red glows deepest toward the edges and flashes bright through the middle. Ruby is the July birthstone and the traditional gift for a 40th anniversary, which gives the ring meaning well beyond Valentine's Day.
What does the diamond halo add?
The halo is a continuous border of round Lab-Grown Diamonds, each in its own beaded setting, tracing the heart from its two rounded lobes down to the point. White diamonds against red make the ruby look larger and more saturated than it would on its own, and the frame protects the heart's edges and delicate point from everyday knocks.
How wide is the band?
The band is 2.5 millimeters wide, a little under a tenth of an inch: substantial enough to carry the heart and halo securely and feel solid on the finger, slim enough to keep the ruby as the focus. At 2.5mm it stacks comfortably beside a thin wedding band.
Is Lab-Created Ruby real ruby?
Yes. Lab-Created Ruby is corundum, with the same chemical composition, hardness and optical properties as mined ruby. Grown in a controlled lab rather than pulled from the ground, it delivers a clean, even red that would cost many times more in a mined stone of this quality. The FTC asks jewelers to call laboratory-made colored gemstones "Lab-Created" and laboratory-made diamonds "Lab-Grown," which is why both terms appear on this ring.
Can I wear a ruby ring every day?
Ruby is one of the best colored stones for daily wear. It rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond, and here it sits inside a protective diamond halo with a prong guarding the point. Take it off for the gym and harsh cleaners, and clean it at home with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush.
Is this a good promise ring or anniversary gift?
A ruby heart in real gold with real diamonds is about as clear a promise ring as exists, built to last decades rather than a season. It is also a natural July birthday gift, a 40th anniversary gift, a Valentine's Day gift, or a push present for a July baby. Because it is made to order, it arrives new and made for the person wearing it.
Which gold color should I choose?
Yellow gold is the classic ruby setting, warm and rich, with a vintage feel. White gold makes the halo almost disappear so the red heart seems to float in light. Rose gold is the most romantic pairing, its pink tone running straight into the red. Every option is solid 14K gold all the way through, never plated.
What quality are the diamonds in the halo?
The halo diamonds are round Lab-Grown Diamonds, D–F color and VS clarity, so they face up crisp white against the ruby in any metal. Because the total diamond weight is under one carat, they arrive uncertified.
Prefer a different stone?
The same heart halo is made in four center stones. For a February birthday, see the heart-shaped amethyst halo ring. For soft pink, the pink tourmaline heart promise ring. For all-white sparkle, the heart-shaped Lab-Grown Diamond halo ring.
