Heart-Shaped Lab-Created Amethyst Halo Ring in Solid 14K Gold
A deep violet heart, cut to throw purple light from every facet, held in three prongs and wrapped in a halo of Lab-Grown Diamonds that follows the heart's outline all the way to its point. It sits on a smooth 2.5mm band of solid 14K gold that lets the color do the talking. Designed, cast, set and polished by hand in my Woodside, Queens workshop.
Why a heart-shaped amethyst?
A heart cut is the most direct way a piece of jewelry can say what it means, and amethyst gives it a color that reads as rich and grown-up rather than sweet. The faceting on a heart-shaped stone runs out from a central star, so the violet deepens toward the edges and flashes bright through the middle. Amethyst is the February birthstone and the traditional gift for a sixth anniversary, which gives the ring a meaning beyond its shape.
What does the diamond halo add?
The halo is a continuous border of round Lab-Grown Diamonds, each in its own beaded setting, tracing the heart from the two rounded lobes at the top down to the point. White diamonds against violet create the strongest contrast a colored stone can have, so the amethyst looks larger, brighter and more saturated than it would on its own. The halo also protects the edges of the heart, especially its delicate point, from everyday knocks.
How wide is the band?
The band is 2.5 millimeters wide, a little under a tenth of an inch. That is substantial enough to carry the heart and halo securely and feel solid on the finger, while staying slim enough that the amethyst remains the focus. At 2.5mm it also stacks comfortably beside a thin wedding band or another everyday ring.
Is Lab-Created Amethyst real amethyst?
Yes. Lab-Created Amethyst is crystalline quartz with the same chemical composition, hardness and optical properties as mined amethyst. It is grown in a controlled lab rather than pulled from the ground, which is why the color is this even and this saturated, with none of the pale zones or brown tints common in mined stones at this price. The FTC asks jewelers to call laboratory-made colored gemstones "Lab-Created" and laboratory-made diamonds "Lab-Grown," which is why both terms appear on this ring.
Can I wear an amethyst ring every day?
Amethyst rates 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, hard enough for regular wear when it is set well, and this one sits inside a protective diamond halo with a prong guarding the point. Treat it the way you would any colored-stone ring: take it off for the gym, gardening and cleaning with harsh chemicals, and keep it out of long, direct sun, which can fade amethyst over years. Clean it with warm water, mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush.
Is this a good promise ring or anniversary gift?
It is one of the clearest promise rings there is: a heart, in real gold, with real diamonds, built to last decades rather than a season. It also works as a February birthday gift, a sixth anniversary gift, a Valentine's Day gift, or a push present for a February baby. Because it is made to order, it arrives new and made for the person wearing it.
Which gold color should I choose?
Yellow gold warms the violet and gives the ring a rich, vintage feel. White gold makes the halo almost disappear into the diamonds, so the purple heart looks like it is floating in light. Rose gold is the most romantic pairing, its pink tone blending with the amethyst into one warm glow. Every option is solid 14K gold all the way through, never plated.
What quality are the diamonds in the halo?
The halo diamonds are round Lab-Grown Diamonds, D–F color and VS clarity, so they face up crisp white against the amethyst in any metal. Because the total diamond weight is under one carat, they arrive uncertified.
Prefer a different stone?
The same heart halo is made in four center stones. For classic red, see the heart-shaped ruby halo ring. For soft pink, the pink tourmaline heart promise ring. For all-white sparkle, the heart-shaped Lab-Grown Diamond halo ring.
