How big is a 2.5 carat emerald cut?
Roughly 9mm long by 7mm wide. The outline matters less than the table — the flat top face — which at this weight is a large, open, unbroken rectangle of diamond. That is the entire appeal of the shape and at two and a half carats it is at its most powerful. An emerald cut this size does not sparkle at you; it reads as a slab of ice with long rectangular flashes moving across it.
Why does clarity decide everything at this size?
Because step-cut facets are windows, not mirrors. A brilliant cut bounces light back and buries an inclusion in the noise; an emerald cut lets you look straight down into the stone, and a 9mm table is a very large window. An inclusion that would be marginal at one carat is obvious at two and a half from across a room — not under a loupe. This is the single most important thing to understand about buying a large emerald cut, and it is why yours is VS+ rather than the SI grades that are easy to find at this weight and always cheaper. A cheap 2.5ct emerald cut looks like it has something in it, because it does.
What about color?
Same logic, same direction, and more so. The open table shows body color exactly as it shows inclusions. A G or H that would pass unnoticed in a round reads visibly warm across a 9mm table, especially in white gold or platinum where there is no metal warmth to cover it. Yours is D through F — the colorless range — which is what keeps the table clean and the flashes white. The IGI report ships with the ring.
Are the corners fragile at this size?
No, and it is the emerald cut's real advantage as stones get large. The corners are beveled rather than pointed, so there is nothing sharp to chip the way a marquise or pear tip can. Four prongs, one at each corner, hold a 2.5ct stone securely without V-prongs or a reinforced tip. Of all the stones at this weight, this and the cushion are the two you can genuinely wear every day without thinking about it.
Which wedding band fits it?
A contoured band. There is a second gallery under the head — an extra rail of gold beneath the basket that carries the stone's weight and stops the prongs flexing over years of wear. At this weight it is structural rather than optional, and most makers leave it out. It is also why a straight band will not seat: the band meets the gallery rather than the shank and stands off, leaving a gap under the stone. A curved band dips at the center, clears the gallery and nests flush. I make both to order, so tell me and I will cut the pair to meet properly — or start with the plain contour band or the pavé contour.
How long does it take, and can it be resized?
