How big is a 2.5 carat cushion cut?
About 7.5mm across, with the corner-to-corner spread running wider. A 2.5ct round measures 8.7mm, so a cushion faces up smaller edge to edge — like a princess, it carries more of its weight in depth than in spread. This is the one thing to understand before buying a large cushion: a deeply cut one can look a full half carat smaller than its paper weight. Ask for the measurements, not just the carat number, and I will give you both.
Crushed ice or chunky facets?
At two and a half carats this is the decision that defines the stone, and almost nobody explains it. Cushions are cut two ways. A crushed-ice cushion has many small facets that scatter light into a glittering, grainy shimmer. A chunky or brilliant-style cushion has fewer, larger facets that flash in distinct blocks, closer to what a round does. At one carat the difference is subtle. At 7.5mm it is the entire character of the ring — crushed ice reads busy and sparkling, chunky reads clean and architectural. Tell me which you want and I will source to it. Cushion or round at 2.5 carats?
A round is brighter and faces up larger. A cushion is softer in outline, meaningfully less expensive per carat, and less expected. At this weight the price difference is real money, and for many people the cushion's warmer, rounder outline suits a large stone better than a hard circle does. They are close cousins rather than opposites — if you like round but do not want the obvious choice, this is the shape.
Are the corners fragile?
No, and at this size it is a genuine advantage. The corners are rounded rather than pointed, so there is nothing sharp to chip against a doorframe the way a marquise or pear tip can. Four prongs hold a 2.5ct cushion securely with no V-prongs or reinforced head needed. Along with the emerald cut it is one of the two stones at this weight you can wear every day without thinking about it.
What color and clarity is the diamond?
D through F, the colorless range, and VS+ clarity, eye-clean at any angle. Cushions are brilliant-faceted so they hide inclusions better than a step cut — but at two and a half carats there is far more surface for tint to show, and cushions in particular hold warmth in the corners. Staying in D–F keeps the stone even from center to edge. The IGI report ships with the ring.
Which wedding band fits it?
A contoured band. There is a second gallery under the head — an extra rail of gold beneath the basket that carries the stone's weight and stops the prongs flexing over years of wear. At this weight it is structural rather than optional, and most makers leave it out. It is also why a straight band will not seat: the band meets the gallery rather than the shank and stands off, leaving a gap under the stone. A curved band dips at the center, clears the gallery and nests flush. I make both to order, so tell me and I will cut the pair to meet properly — or start with the plain contour band or the pavé contour.
How long does it take, and can it be resized?
Made to order in 7 to 10 business days, sizes 4 through 9 including halves. Resizing is complimentary within 60 days of delivery, craftsmanship carries a lifetime warranty, and you have 14 days to return it if it is not right and you have not had it engraved.
