How much finger does a 1.5 carat marquise cover?
Roughly 12mm long by 6mm wide. A 1.5ct round measures about 7.4mm across — so this covers over half again as much finger length for the identical carat weight. The marquise has the largest face-up length of any diamond shape at any given weight, and at 1.5 carats it is the single most dramatic stone in the catalog. It will read closer to two carats than to one and a half.
Does a marquise make your finger look longer?
Yes, and at this size the effect is unmistakable. The stone runs lengthwise along the finger, so the eye follows the line out toward the fingertip rather than stopping at the width of the band. On shorter fingers it is transformative. On long fingers it reads elegant rather than theatrical.
Aren't the points fragile at this size?
The tips are the vulnerable part of any marquise and a larger stone stands taller and takes more knocks — which is why yours are covered rather than left open. Six prongs hold it: one seated over each point, plus two along either side. The end prongs sit on the tips rather than beside them, so the two sharpest edges of a 12mm stone are under metal instead of exposed to a doorframe. You give up a sliver of the visual line at each end and get a stone that survives daily wear. At 1.5 carats that is not optional and I would not build it the other way.
What color and clarity is the diamond?
D through F, the colorless range, and VS+ clarity, eye-clean at any angle. Color matters more on a marquise than on any other shape — elongated cuts concentrate body color at the tips, and a 12mm stone has two long tapers for it to pool in. A G or J would show warmth at both ends where a round would hide it entirely. Staying in D–F is what keeps the points as white as the middle. The IGI report ships with the ring.
What about the bow-tie?
Every marquise has one across its center, and it is more pronounced in this shape than in an oval or pear. It appears nowhere on a lab report. At 1.5 carats a bow-tie is the first thing a badly cut stone shows you, which is why I check every marquise face-up at the bench before it goes near a setting.
Which wedding band fits a marquise?
A contoured or notched band, for two reasons. The first is the points: a straight band leaves a visible gap where the tip crosses it, more so at 12mm than at 10mm. The second applies to every ring I build at this weight — there is a second gallery under the head, an extra rail of gold beneath the basket that carries the stone's weight and stops the prongs flexing over years of wear. Most makers leave it out. A straight band meets that gallery rather than the shank and stands off; a curved band clears it and nests flush. Since I make both to order, tell me and I will cut them as a pair — or start with the plain contour band or the pavé contour.
How long does it take, and can it be resized?
