Three-Stone Bypass Ring in Solid 14K Gold
Two arms of solid 14K gold sweep past each other and stop just short of touching, and in that gap sits the stone that means something: a Lab-Created Blue Sapphire, Lab-Created Ruby, Lab-Created Emerald or Lab-Grown Diamond, flanked by two Lab-Grown Diamonds. Approximately a quarter carat total, set on a diagonal so it moves across the finger instead of sitting flat. Designed, cast, set and polished by hand in my Woodside, Queens workshop.
What is a bypass ring?
A bypass ring is one where the two ends of the band never meet head-on. They slide past each other at the top of the finger. On this design each arm rises into a smooth, rounded wave that curls around the center stone from opposite sides, so the three stones sit at a slight angle rather than in a straight row. That diagonal is the whole point: it catches light from more directions as the hand moves, and it gives a 0.25 carat ring more presence than a straight three-stone of the same weight.
How big are the stones on this ring?
In the Lab-Grown Diamond version the three stones total approximately 0.25 carat: a round center of about 3.4 millimeters held in four prongs, with a round Lab-Grown Diamond of about 2.4 millimeters on each side, each in its own prong head. The Lab-Created Sapphire, Ruby and Emerald centers are cut to the same millimeter size, so every version has the same footprint on the hand. The band is approximately 2 millimeters wide under the palm and swells as it rises into the bypass. The Lab-Grown Diamonds are graded D–F color and VS clarity, and because they are under one carat they arrive uncertified.
Which center stone should I choose?
Choose by birthstone or by color. Lab-Created Blue Sapphire is the September birthstone and the deepest, most saturated option, a royal blue that reads clearly from across a room. Lab-Created Ruby is the July birthstone, a pigeon-blood red with real fire against the white side stones. Both are corundum, rating 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes them the easiest colored stones to wear every single day. Lab-Created Emerald is the May birthstone, a vivid grass green; at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale it is softer, so it rewards a little more care around hard knocks and harsh cleaners. The all-Lab-Grown Diamond version is the April birthstone and the choice for anyone who wants pure white sparkle with the same sculpted silhouette.
What is the difference between Lab-Created and Lab-Grown?
They describe the same thing for different stones. The FTC asks jewelers to call laboratory-made diamonds "Lab-Grown" and laboratory-made colored gemstones "Lab-Created." A Lab-Created Sapphire or Ruby has the same chemical composition, hardness and optical properties as a mined one; it simply comes from a controlled lab instead of the ground, which is why the color is this clean and this consistent at this price.
Which gold color works best with each stone?
Yellow gold warms everything it touches and makes ruby and emerald glow; it is the most classic, vintage-leaning look. White gold gives sapphire its crispest, coolest blue and makes the all-diamond version look brightest. Rose gold is the softest and most romantic pairing, especially with ruby, where the pink metal and red stone run together into one warm tone. Every metal is solid 14K gold all the way through, never plated, so there is no layer to wear off.
Is a bypass ring comfortable to wear every day?
Yes. The ring sits low to the finger and every edge of the bypass is rounded and polished, so there are no sharp corners to catch on sweaters or hair. The two gold arms rise slightly above the side stones on each end, which shields the setting from side impacts better than an exposed three-stone head. The one thing to know: because the shape curves, it does not sit flush against a perfectly straight band. It looks best worn alone or next to a contoured or curved band.
Can this be an engagement ring, a promise ring or an anniversary gift?
All three. For couples who want color and meaning over a large white diamond, a sapphire or ruby bypass ring is a strong, characterful engagement ring. It also works as a promise ring, a push present or an anniversary gift built around a birthstone: her month, the month you met, or the month of a child's birth. Three stones have long been read as past, present and future, and the bypass shape adds two paths meeting in the middle.
