A 2.5ct cushion Lab-Grown Diamond, D–F color, VS+ clarity, IGI certified, held above a hidden halo of pavé diamonds, on a band set with pavé down both shoulders in solid 14K gold. What is a hidden halo?
A ring of small diamonds set around the outside of the basket, below the center stone, facing outward rather than up. From directly above you do not see it. From the side, and every time her hand moves, a band of light appears underneath the stone. It is a detail for the wearer rather than something announced across a room.
Where does the pavé stop and the halo begin?
A cushion has rounded corners, so the shoulders arrive more gently than on a princess and more squarely than on a round. The risk here is scale. Cushion faceting is already broken into small flashes, and shoulder stones set too large add a third texture until the whole ring goes to glitter. I keep the pavé fine and the halo finer, so the center stone stays the loudest thing on the hand.
Does a hidden halo still make sense at 2.5 carats?
Less than it does lower down the range, and it is worth saying so. At two and a half carats the center stone is already the largest thing on the hand and doing all the talking. The halo becomes a private detail rather than a contribution to how large the ring reads. People who choose it at this weight choose it because they like knowing it is there. If you are weighing the halo and the pavé against putting the same money into a better center stone, at 2.5ct I would put it in the stone.
Does the halo compete with a crushed-ice cushion?
This is the question worth asking on a cushion and nowhere else. A crushed-ice cushion already scatters light into hundreds of small flashes, and a hidden halo adds more small flashes directly beneath it, so in the side profile the two can blur into one another. Under a chunkier, more defined cushion the halo stays legible as its own band of light. Both are handsome. If you want the halo seen as a halo, tell me and I will source the chunkier cut.
How much pavé is on the band?
The shoulders carry hand-set pavé Lab-Grown Diamonds down roughly half the shank, bead set and bright cut so the metal between the stones still throws light rather than going flat. Half coverage rather than full is deliberate: the underside stays plain gold, which is easier to resize, more comfortable against the next finger, and does not wear stones against a desk all day.
Does it make the diamond look bigger?
No. A traditional halo surrounds the stone face-up and enlarges the outline. A hidden halo sits underneath, so face-up you see exactly what this stone gives you. What the halo adds is depth in the side profile, and what the pavé adds is light along the finger.
Does it sit higher than a solitaire?
Slightly. The halo needs room beneath the stone, so the head sits a touch taller than the plain solitaire in the same shape. On most hands the difference is not noticeable in wear. If she works with her hands or has asked for a low profile, the plain solitaire is the better ring.
What color and clarity is the center diamond?
D through F, the colorless range, and VS+ clarity, eye-clean at any angle. Color matching matters more here than on a solitaire because the halo sits directly against the center and the pavé runs away from it down the shoulders. A warm halo under a colorless stone is the most common tell of a cheaply built ring, and it shows from exactly the angle the halo is meant to be seen from. Which wedding band fits it?
A contoured band. There is a second gallery under the head — an extra rail of gold beneath the basket that carries the stone’s weight and stops the prongs flexing over years of wear — and the hidden halo sits on top of it. A straight band meets the gallery rather than the shank and stands off. A curved band dips at the center, clears both and nests flush. I make both to order — or start with the plain contour band or the pavé contour.
How long does it take, and can it be resized?
