Product Description

Lab-Created Ruby Solitaire Pendant

One 5mm Lab-Created Ruby held in four prongs, on a chain, and nothing else. Red is the hardest colour to wear casually and the easiest to wear well — a single stone at the collarbone does more than a whole necklace of something quieter.

What you are getting

A 5mm round Lab-Created Ruby, roughly half a carat, four-prong set with an open gallery so light passes through the stone from behind. Solid 14K yellow, white or rose gold, on an adjustable cable chain that wears at 16 or 18 inches with a lobster clasp. Solid throughout, never plated or hollow.

Why the gallery is open

A ruby set against a solid backing goes dark. The colour in corundum comes from light passing through the stone rather than bouncing off the surface, so closing the back turns a red gem into a red spot. The basket here is left open underneath, which is why the stone stays lit at the collarbone rather than reading flat.

How the metal changes it

Yellow gold warms the red and pushes it toward the traditional. White gold cools it and makes the stone read more sharply saturated against the metal. Rose gold is the unexpected one — the pink in the alloy sits so close to the ruby that the two blend, which reads softer and more modern.

About the stone

Lab-Created Ruby is corundum, chemically and optically the same material as mined ruby, with the same 9 on the Mohs scale. That hardness is why a ruby works as an everyday pendant rather than an occasional one — it will take knocks against a desk edge or a seatbelt without the surface dulling.
