The Grooved Disc

The three horizontal grooves that divide the Tauren disc into four bands are not decorative — they are structural. Each groove is a precise channel cut into the face of the disc, its walls parallel and its floor flat, creating a shadow line that runs from one edge of the disc to the other. The center groove — the widest of the three — is the channel in which the three emeralds sit, their girdles held between the parallel walls of the channel and their tables flush with the surface of the disc. The upper and lower grooves are narrower, their function purely visual: they divide the solid gold above and below the emerald row into two distinct bands, giving the disc a horizontal rhythm that draws the eye across the emerald row from left to right. The result is a stud that reads as a piece of architecture — a small building façade of gold and green, its horizontal lines as deliberate and as precise as the courses of a stone wall.

The Channel Setting

The channel setting — a row of stones set between two parallel rails of metal, their girdles held by the rails and their tables flush with the surface — is the most secure and most streamlined setting for a row of matched stones. In the Tauren, the three emeralds are channel-set in the center groove of the disc, their tables flush with the gold surface on either side, creating a completely smooth front face with no raised prongs to catch on hair or fabric. The channel setting also holds the three emeralds in precise alignment — their centers equally spaced, their tables at the same level — so that the emerald row reads as a single horizontal band of vivid green rather than three individual stones.

Why Lab-Grown Emerald?

Lab-grown emeralds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural emeralds — the same crystal structure, the same refractive index, the same vivid green color — but grown in a controlled environment that produces stones with fewer inclusions, greater clarity, and greater consistency than most natural emeralds. In the Tauren, where three emeralds must be matched for color, size, and clarity to maintain the uniformity of the channel row, the consistency of lab-grown stones is essential: each set of three emeralds is selected to be identical in color and diameter, ensuring that the center band reads as a single, uniform field of vivid green.

The grooved disc was chosen because it is the most efficient way to give a small stud a three-dimensional presence: the grooves create shadow lines that make the disc appear larger and more complex than its 6mm diameter suggests. Named for Taurus — the bull, the earth sign, the sign of the emerald — the Tauren is an earring for those who wear their birthstone with intention.
